Introduced in 2001, the .NAME generic top-level domain extension is the sole TLD planned for personal websites only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other labels people are known by. At first, only third-level registrations were allowed, so if you planned to secure john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already registered 3rd-level domains remained running.
